What, Where, How, Why & When.

What

At 1450m above sea level, Wombat Cabin is a Deluxe, 2 Bedroom, self-contained Cabin, located at the top of Mount Baw Baw, within the Alpine Village. It is only 150m from the main day carpark, at the bottom of the frantic frog toboggan park, and within 100m of the Maltese cross T-bar. Other mountains don’t offer this sort of unique accommodation, completely private. Wombat Cabin can cater for a maximum of five guests comfortably. The second bedroom, which sleeps 3, has its own tv & dvd player to keep the kids/friends separately occupied.

Only the master bedroom has linen and towels.

If the second bedroom is being used, we recommend bringing sleeping bags and pillow cases, or additional linen can be ordered through guest services. There is also a private covered balcony with table and chairs, where you can relax  and listen to the nearby creek bubbling all year round. A large drying cupboard ensures that all your gear is ready for the next days outings, regardless of how wet you managed to get. The fully equipped kitchen caters for all your possible needs, but the nearby pub and restaurant make your holiday much more memorable, and relaxing, no dishes. Snow can fall anytime from May to October, so make sure you have the right gear to stay warm and dry.

Where & How

Wombat Cabin is only 2.5 hrs drive from Melbourne’s Eastern suburbs. Take the M1 Monash Freeway toward Warragal, then follow the signs via Neerim South and Noojee. You need to book your Resort Entry tickets online before you leave. Snow chains are required to be carried by all cars entering the resort during the winter months, so hire them before you leave. if you can, as stock is limited to hire at the resort entry gate. For current information on conditions, chains hire, lift tickets and resort entry see the Mt Baw Baw Website.

While passing through Noojee, pick up a smoked trout from The Noojee Trout Farm , then try the best parma’s around, at The Outpost Retreat Bar and Restaurant. (There’s chorizo sausage on the Spanish parma and its - omg!) A beer in the toolshed bar, with the biggest fireplace you’ve ever seen, is not easily forgotten. Great to visit in the summer as well.

From here, it’s another 50 minutes journey through magnificent Alpine forests. Be careful after dark, large deer frequent this section of windy road.

Alternatively, a less windy route, taking about the same time, is via Moe, then Erica and onto the South Face road. It’s 26km, well signed, but unsealed, but it’s wide, and graded and an easy drive. So take your time and enjoy the scenery. Look out for the crimson rosellas, lyre birds, wallabies, wombats and even the occasional deer. Tyre chains must be carried during winter, and yellow lines on the road means that you are above the snowline, so drive slowly and carefully.

If you don’t feel like driving, keep an eye out for the snow train, rail/bus packages which leave from Melbourne in the morning and return you that night.

Why & When

Mount Baw Baw is not only the closest Ski Resort to Melbourne, but has the cheapest lift tickets, and gate entry prices making it ideal for beginners. See video below of what you can expect when you arrive:

Sometimes, you just need to get away, and recharge the batteries, connect with some old friends, or celebrate a special occasion with someone you care for.

If you are Mountain Biking in summer, they can be hired at the village, and a shuttle service can bring you back up from the challenging downhill run. If you are Tobogganing, Skiing or Boarding in winter, Baw Baw Ski Hire, in the village, can fit you out with whatever you require.

And the ‘When’ is now, or as soon as possible.

Check the Mt Baw Baw Website for Wombat Cabin availability, or to book online to reserve your place for a snow or summer adventure.

So, now you’re on your way up…

Tips

So you managed to get a booking, and you’re about to leave home. The hard bit’s over with. Make sure you pack a torch, and it has a good battery, as there are no streetlights up here, so the casual stroll to the pub or restaurant becomes a little more difficult in the dark. Sunset at Village Central can be quite spectacular up here. Look out toward Westernport Bay in the distance, while having a quiet one during the cocktail hour. You can’t beat that for something different. The Restaurant opening hours are on the Mt Baw Baw Website.

A back pack during winter, makes your walk down to Wombat Cabin easier, or otherwise, oversnow transport is available from the carpark for your luggage, and yourself, right to the door.

If you enjoy a walk, short or long, there’s heaps to see. In Summer the adventurous can walk to Mt St Guinear and back in a day, or in winter you can snow shoe or cross country ski the same well marked trail.

Phone reception is excellent, in case you need to keep in contact, or check those important emails.

Bring all your snacks and treats with you. There is a small General Store, open mainly in the winter. The Starter Pack in the cabin has a small milk, tea & cofee. Bring everything else you could possibly need or want, even if you leave it in the car and take it home. Be prepared. TV reception via UHF or Satellite is not reliable in remote areas so there are some dvds and books in Wombat Cabin, but bring your favourites from home to avoid disappointment.
